Key West Part I

During a recent work trip, I was able to get out and visit Key West during the holidays.

The Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys.

Yes, I made it to the hotel.

Danger...shark crossing!

Key lime pie in Key West.

On my day off, I rented an old, rusty bike to cruise around the island. Really, bikes are the best mode of transportation around this area if you are just site-seeing.

It was a bright and sunny day.

...but I did find some shady spots along the way.

I at least got to find one selfie spot without a line. Maybe this is just for those of us from the east coast.

...and from the other side.

Christmas tree made of old lobster traps?

A Christmas tree decorated with life rings and star fish?

Cuban Coffee Queen...I ate at these locations several times on my trip.

Yes, I drink coffee even in the blazing hot winter sun here in Key West.

Nice little snack in the shade.

The cruise ships were in town while I was there, of course.

I went to the local State Park. Its cheaper to get in on a bike instead of a car. I should have renewed my membership card for Florida State Parks using my veteran's benefit of free access. They were more strict here than in other parks throughout the state. They won't take military ID or the VA card, I needed the parks card issued by the state.

Touring the old fort was educational.

It was also a nice walk for the view...

...and for the shade.

Some of the old pieces were on display.

Outside of the fort were trails to see it from the outside.

Another view.

This bird was hard to miss. You could hear him from far away.

I saw the advertisement for Onlywood Pizzeria on the hotel TV. I wanted to check it out because of the fresh mozzarella made daily and the wood fired pizza.

Starting with the mozzarella caprese and aranciata to drink.

Wood fired pizza.

After dinner cappuccino.

And of course dessert.

It was a huge meal.

To be continued...

New Sandbox

We had an old turtle pond we made in the back yard but no more turtle. For a while it sat with old rain water where mosquitoes and frogs would lay eggs. When we shrank the dog fence, we filled the hole where the old turtle pond was with sand. Then Ethan started playing with the sand at least once a week. We had been discussing making a sandbox for him. During some Christmas vacation, I finally finished it.

The sandbox was a dug-out style due to size. We also used some heavy duty 2x12 pressure treated boards that we had left over from the new dog pen after adjusting the design. Once we finished the sandbox, we were able to make good use of all the material from the dog pen.

First I put the boards in the hole for measurement and fitting but we fastened them together outside of the hole.

The usual shot...boards being cut to size.

Once they were all cut, we had to screw them together.

It sounds easy but it can be meticulous.

We screwed all the boards together outside of the hole on the level ground. We used heavy duty lag bolts to screw the boards together. Naturally, the boards were warped, some more than others. We really couldn't have squared off these warped boards without our cheap $10 90-degree angle clamp we had laying around the garage. That clamp was able to save us from wasting the warped boards we had left over from the last project that twisted from lying around this wet Florida environment.

After the walls were installed, we installed seating all around.

The final sandbox was about 7x8 feet and the hole was about 12-16 inches deep. It took around 2000lbs of sand to fill it just over half way. I did a lot of research for bulk sand. Minimum delivery was 3000lbs and was a little more expensive than 2000lbs (40, 50lbs bags) from Lowes. My pickup truck is having issues when it rains and I almost didn't make it back home after the full 1 ton of sand was loaded in the pouring rain.

The sandbox was a success and we were able to use it as an early Christmas present.

It ended up being a great activity day or night. Something for us to do together after work without the benefit of sun or an activity for the mild winter days.

Happy New Year 2023

Ethan is getting more excited about different holidays. New Years wasn't different. We enjoyed shopping for new decorations and using old decorations from last year. He's still a little young for going out late and that was confirmed this year. We were glad we stayed home.

It was a party at home for New Year's 2023.

I had to blow up the balloons. We still had leftover helium from Ethan's Birthday.

He loves balloons and couldn't wait for the celebrations.

Decorated and dressed up for the festivities.

Even Brownie was celebrating.

Happy New Year 2023!

He was asking to set off the poppers and confetti all night, long before midnight. We ended up decorating and taking pictures around 10:00 pm and beginning to celebrate. By the time midnight came around he was acting wild and was a lot to handle. We were glad he was excited but we could tell it was too much excitement late at night. While I look forward to being able to see fireworks at midnight at a big gathering, I'm glad we can still have fun at home.

Meeting Santa for Christmas 2022

Each year we visit Santa. I'm glad we found a nice mall to visit last year. We went to the Palm Beach Gardens Mall again this year to visit Santa and made sure to get pictures with plenty of time before Christmas.

We got dressed up this year combining a few outfit pieces and even customized the vest with new buttons. The hat is new too since he outgrew the small hat from last year.

The decorations at the mall were very nice and made good pictures.

Behind the scenes with Santa.

More behind-the-scenes action.

We got several cute pictures and nice shots.

He asked Santa for money so he could buy toys.

Very nice pictures.

Merry Christmas!
