New Car

I guess if there was any doubt, there is none now. I am becoming more of a Dad each day. I took a big step and we got a family car. It is a Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring (premium package) and I'm sure that the crossover SUV will be the station wagon of this decade.

We got the car brand new. It was so new, it only had 4 miles on the odometer when we bought it. Technically it is a "lease with an option to buy" but this way there is less than 0.3% interest for 3 years. There are still "gotcha" fees that I'll have to pay eventually but it was a better deal than an outright purchase. We wanted to buy new anyway and now we have an out if we change out minds. We take good care of cars and keep them forever. Buying new will let us keep the car longer since there is no rough wear from previous owners who don't care about maintaining vehicles. In my estimation, we are paying more up front for the new car but after 5+ years, we begin to recoup the extra money because there is less wear on the vehicle, therefore less maintenance is required.

The 2018 Mazda CX-5 is also the safest car on the road in America. That was one of our motivations for this purchase. When I was buying insurance for the vehicle, I was talking with the insurance agent on the phone. When she was researching what discounts I was eligible for, she got to safety feature discounts. As she began to read off the safety features she said, "Front airbags, side airbags, front head air bags, rear head air bags, cross-traffic alert, .... Wow this has a lot of safety features!" Needless to say she didn't repeat all of them and I got the full safety discount available. Mazda makes sure you don't miss the features either and instead of designing safety features to be hidden for aesthetics, it's the opposite, they are prominently displayed. I had no difficulty whatsoever finding the anchor bars for Ethan's child safety seat.

Working in Miami

I just can't seem to get away from working in Miami. I had a two week conference in downtown Miami in one of the hotels there. I had a 90+ minute commute each way which was a drag. Because there was no decent parking, I had to park the car with the valet. Luckily work paid for the valet parking but it did put me behind trying to get home on time. I figured that I would at least take some photos.

The view of downtown Miami coming from I-95 and driving east towards Miami Beach.

Here's another view without the signs.

This was the marina at the hotel looking across the intercoastal towards Miami Beach. I would walk back this way to the patio area to stretch out during breaks.

Often when I attend local conferences, I'll dress up a little bit.

Avengers Infinity War / Infinity Gauntlet

Last month the big movie of the season came out: Avengers Infinity War. It was the culmination of 10 years worth of movies and story telling. I was able to see the movie by myself on a weekday around noon so I was the only one in the theater. I got to get up as much as I wanted to :)

In anticipation of the movie, I had a bunch of posts on Instagram as many of us were anticipating the movie. In the spirit of this, I posted the full collection of Marvel's Infinity Gauntlet which came out in the early 1990s when I started collecting comics. Notice that much of this story took place in the Silver Surfer comics and not a single Avengers story. Well, Marvel Studios didn't have the rights to Silver Surfer, Fox did so they had to recreate the story and thus we have Avengers Infinity War.

Anyway here is what I posted on Instagram. All of these are in exceptional condition and it is a complete set including the main story line and all tie-ins.

Thanos Quest 1-2. By the 1990s, Thanos was a forgotten character. This story introduced him to a new generation.

Infinity Gauntlet 1-6. This mini-series was the main story line.

Dr. Strange Sorcerer Supreme 31-36.

Quasar 26-28. Who? Right, Quasar was not in the movie.

Spider-Man 17.

Cloak and Dagger 18.

Silver Surfer 34-38, prelude to Infinity Gauntlet.

Silver Surfer 50-55. Infinity Gauntlet story line.

Silver Surfer 56-60, Infinity Gauntlet story line.

Incredible Hulk 384-385.

Sleepwalker 7. Who? At this point, Marvel pushed the story to a few less popular comics to try and attract readers to another issue they could buy on a monthly basis.

Warlock and the Infinity Watch. This begins the post Infinity Gauntlet story.

What if?: Silver Surfer Possessed the Infinity Gauntlet. Marvel had a lot of these What If? stories and many ended up coming true 20-30 years later as readers would complain about lazy writing that looked back in time instead of coming up with fresh stories. Anyway, this goes to show just how involved Silver Surfer was in the plot yet he never appeared in the movie.
